Workshops

Both workshops, TeamOJT Workshop and Train the On-the-Job Trainer Workshop, can be delivered at your facility or in Seattle - See Consulting Services for details on presentation options and pricing.

TeamOJT Workshop

Workshop description - TeamOJT is a 2-day hands-on workshop that teaches you a simple eight-step process that empowers employee teams to identify tasks that need to be trained and documented, write step-by-step training modules on those tasks, verify the modules on-site, and conduct OJT. Participants also learn how to assess the need for OJT, develop a project plan, a training implementation plan and maintenance and evaluation plans. The material in this workshop is useful for any size organization or any industry.

Who should attend? - Supervisors, training managers and directors, operating managers, facilitators, human resources personnel, front-line employees in all types of jobs and professions, self-directed work teams, plant superintendents, safety specialists, engineers, subject matter experts, instructional systems designers, and human performance technologists. Basically, anyone struggling to capture and standardize job processes, cut training time, increase knowledge retention and get employee ownership in the training process.

How is it different? - The unique TeamOJT model clearly distinguishes this workshop from all other approaches to OJT. And the workshop itself is structured so that participants work in teams as they practice the steps of the model in order to see first hand the positive results of having people work together on developing training materials. Another differentiating element is the refreshingly simple, common sense approach to job task analysis and training module writing that any employee can apply immediately.

Class size is limited to 12 participants.

Benefits to You:

  1. You will learn by doing - through hands-on practice while working as part of a design team and as a design team facilitator.
  2. You will learn a systematic methodology that you can use with any group in any organization to build and manage a comprehensive on-the-job training program that results in standardized procedures and consistency in task performance.
  3. You will learn through case studies from leading-edge companies who have successfully implemented TeamOJT.
  4. You will practice a simple Two-Question Technique to identify tasks, skills and knowledge required for performing job tasks.
  5. You will leave the workshop with actual training modules written in an easy-to-read and-use format that are ready to be used back on the job.
  6. You will discover and apply a proven method for objective, yet easy trainee evaluation.
  7. You will learn how to develop and implement an OJT program that guarantees improved morale and employee ownership of processes, procedures and the entire OJT program.
  8. You will receive free and unlimited follow-up assistance via e-mail, phone, or fax.

After the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify the need for structured OJT
  • Conduct a team job task analysis
  • Develop a project plan
  • Write step-by-step training modules, cover sheets, and performance objectives
  • Create a training implementation plan
  • Tryout, evaluate and modify the training modules and cover sheets on-site
  • Set up maintenance and evaluation plans
  • Conduct on-the-job training

The workshop will be tailored for your specific requirements and will maximize the use of your own materials, procedures, policies, and terminology.

Train-the-OJT-Trainer Workshop

Workshop description - Train-the-OJT-Trainer is a 2-day hands-on workshop that provides your trainers with the advanced training required for OJT trainer certification. It provides your trainers with in-depth knowledge and skills in working with all learning and behavioral styles, using encouraging communication techniques, motivating difficult trainees and evaluating trainee performance. Participants get extensive practice using the Five-Step OJT Cycle to deliver the OJT and practice both roles - trainer and trainee.

Who should attend? - Supervisors, managers, trainers, front-line employees and anyone else in your organization who has the responsibility to train others. Part of the workshop is also recommended for trainees to acquaint them with the OJT process and their role in it.

How is it different? - Unlike most train-the-trainer workshops, the Train-the-OJT-Trainer workshop concentrates solely on how to conduct on-the-job training - usually one-on-one training - that is very different from classroom training. It is based on the same theory and philosophy as the TeamOJT model and may be used in conjunction with it.

Prerequisites - It is assumed that your organization already has training materials that are appropriate for on-the-job training. If not, it will be necessary to spend some time in this workshop developing training modules for use during the workshop.

Class size is limited to 10 participants.

Benefits to You:

  1. You will learn through practice to deliver highly effective and efficient on-the-job training to anyone.
  2. You will receive individual feedback and coaching from the instructor.
  3. You will leave with a video tape of one of your practice training sesions to take back and self-critique.
  4. You will learn a systematic method that enables you and other trainers to achieve inter-rater reliability; i.e., assure that (1) two or more trainers would evaluate the same performance in the same way, and (2) the same trainer would evaluate similar performance in different trainees in the same way.
  5. You will discover ways to continually improve your own technical knowledge and professional competence as a trainer.
  6. You will learn specific short-cuts and time-savers for solving everyday training problems and challenges.
  7. You will learn a simple, quick and fool-proof method to determine trainees' learning and behavioral styles.
  8. You will receive free and unlimited follow-up assistance via e-mail, phone, or fax.

After the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Work effectively with all learning and behavioral styles
  • Conduct OJT pre-meetings with trainees
  • Determine prior skills and knowledge of trainees
  • Implement the Five-Step OJT Cycle
  • Effectively handle and motivate difficult trainees
  • Appraise and document performance
  • Form and participate in OJT Trainer Councils for continuous improvement
  • Select future OJT trainers
  • Master the competencies required for OJT trainer certification

The workshop will be tailored for your specific requirements and will maximize the use of your own materials, procedures, policies, and terminology.

What do Workshop Participants Say?

"In six weeks, we will introduce a whole new product line. All new and existing operators will be qualified and certified using TeamOJT. Your workshop made my task so very clear, not to mention easy to sell to the management team. I can only hope to one day return the favor."
- Senior Training Specialist
"At every training-related conference I hope for one or two presentations that have solid, practical information that can help me do my job better, and this year you were one of the best."
- Director of Technical Training
"I really enjoyed your workshop at the ISPI conference last week. Your detailed presentation and materials have been extremely helpful to me. Thank you!"
- Training and Development Manager
"Your work has lighted the way to simple and profound truths. Im truly impressed with the simplicity of the approach and with the clarity that your process provides for trainers to teach and evaluate the trainees. Your emphasis on the role of teams, subject matter experts and facilitators has caused us to rethink our entire training program. Anyone can use the methodology by following the guidelines which you clearly establish."
- Training Manager
"Your workshop was the best one at the entire conference. In fact, it was the only one that gave me tools I can start using next week!"
- Learning Technologies Manager
"Thanks for your presentation. I knew it would be good and it was precisely what I was looking for. My mind was racing the whole time. It fits perfectly into the kinds of things I have been doing. In fact, I plan to use it to actually create work elements and instructions that will become part of the ISO 9000 system. We can also use the process to get buy-in from the line on processes and to initiate training. Again, many thanks!"
