Evaluating OJT Training Modules

TeamOJT Tip of the Month for April, 2007

Every training module needs to be evaluated by trying it out on site with the actual equipment and materials plus a trainee to perform the task. Ask the following questions:
  1. Is the training module easy to read under the actual physical work conditions?
  2. Does the trainee understand the purpose of the task and how it connects to previous and future tasks?
  3. Do both trainer and trainee share a clear understanding of what counts as successful task completion?
  4. Are trainer preparations, special requirements, and all prerequisite modules adequately documented on the cover sheet?
  5. Does the trainee understand all safety and quality points?
  6. Does the trainee ask for information not provided in the training module and/or cover sheet?
  7. Does the trainee understand the sequence of steps?
  8. Does the trainee understand all information and terminology in the module and cover sheet?
  9. Does it take more than 30 minutes to complete the task?
  10. Is the information in sufficient detail that a trainee could perform the task unassisted after one or two training sessions?
  11. Is the training module technically correct?
  12. Is the performance objective compatible with the content of the training module? In other words, will proper performance of the task allow a trainee to meet the objective?
  13. Did you notice any human factors interface issues that could adversely affect task performance; for example, tools not in working order or not available, environmental hazards such as faulty ladders, lack of coordination with other people or groups, or inconsistent terminology?
